Your life can change in a matter of seconds. All you ever built, just vanishing into thin air. Air and atoms and dust. That’s what almost happened to Sally today. She was out in the field and honestly, as a special law-enforcement agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, she should be used to this. Still, it took her by surprise. And so did her girlfriend, Carla.

So when she closed her front door, she leaned against it and let out a sigh. And so did her girlfriend.

“You almost died today.”

“I know”, Sally said. Because she does. She does, she does, she does. And god, how she just wants to forget.

Swallowing, she pushed herself off the door and plopped down on the couch. Everyone in the room knew that she just wanted a drink. Or ten, because she almost died today.

Carla took the seat next to her and pulled Sally into her arms. And Sally let her. And her Girlfriend held her tight, breathing in deeply, just smelling Sally. One hundred percent Sally. Hearing her heartbeat, feeling her breathing, shaking, under her gentle but firm touch, because she almost died today.

And that word. Almost. It can mean so many sad things. She almost made it, she almost told her how she felt, she almost tried to safe her, she almost caught her, she almost fell in love. So yes, almost is perhaps one of the saddest words in the language they know, but for them, it was a blessing from the heavens above.

She was breathing, her heart was beating and she was hurting. So yes, today Sally was indeed alive. And so was Carla, because she was holding her and crying for her and the life they almost lost today.
