In sunsets dim purple afterglow

That’s when I spied the little rat.

Scurry like a hamster, cute, fat

Back and forth on the quayside.

He stopped short, saw me see him

What remarkable human whim.

Hungry with kids to feed

Careless scraps, excess of greed

As no one feeds rats anymore.

They’re so terribly vilified

Carrying disease plague and flies

Not by choice on their part I’m sure

Grand design left things a sewer!

That’s what I thought of that

When I spied the little rat.
