A A A

You wouldn’t have known
If you hadn’t
Found the letter
In his jacket pocket,

The hand written note
From some girl he’d met,
The words finely scribed
Across the pink paper

With those tiny kisses
At the bottom
And that scrawled name
Unintelligible

From the way she wrote.
What was worse
The words or the betrayal?
You couldn’t decide,

The whole thing
Brought its sting
To your heart and eyes,
Made you want to scream,

To shout,
To hit out.
But you calmly
Folded the letter

Back into the envelope,
Placed it neatly
Into the jacket pocket,
And sat

And waited
By the window
For his return
With his lies

And smiles
And cheap scent gift
And short red skirt
Wrapped he’ll say,

For you,
But secretly
For that other girl,
But he’ll make

The switch,
Make pretence,
For her,
The bitch.
