You didn’t know then
As you hugged him,
That Jack
Wasn’t going to come back;

That this was
As close as you and he
Were going to get;
Near as Hell

As lovers can be
This side of Heaven
Or such place.
You didn’t know then

As you kissed him,
That he’d be dead
In a few days;
That all his thoughts

And ways
Would be gone and lost,
And you undone
As one ripped wide,

And all your dreams
And hopes thrown aside.
You didn’t then
As you made love

With him that summer’s day,
That once he went away
That night,
All bright

And beautiful
Would be lost
In one plunging death
From some bridge

On high.
You didn’t know then
As you lay
whispering words

In each other’s ears,
That death stood
But a few days away
Waiting patiently

On the edge of time
With the life clock
Tick ticking
The hours away.
