Ever since
You returned
From the war
You have not been
The same person
As you were before,

It’s as if
Something
Within you died,
Some element
Was dead,
And you

Walking down
The street
Keep looking
At your feet
And where you tread,
In case

Some roadside bomb
Or mine
Is about
To go off,
Or each time
A vehicle

Backfires
A thousand fears
Leap from your eyes
And you go
For your gun
Or fall to the floor

With hands
Over your head
Muttering
Some whispered prayer
To some God out there.
Ever since

You returned
From the war zone
You have been
On your own,
Even though
People speak to you

They’ll never understand
What you’ve seen
Or done
Or had done
To you or those
Close to you,

What sights
Haunt you at night,
What voices
You hear,
What screams
Echo in your dreams.

Ever since
You returned
You have silently fumed,
Been slowly consumed
By some inner fire
Of hate and fear,

Some deep depression
That deepens
Day by day,
Year by year.
