Gauguin
Painted you,
Bedded you, too,

No doubt;
But beyond that,
A certain eternity

Of life
For you,
Frozen in oils

At that given time,
Naked,
Placed in that pose

Upon that bed,
Colourful,
Beautiful,

Such as savages,
Some have thought,
Yet

A naturalness;
A back
To nature theme;

A beyond
The shallow veneer
Of civilized gaze and talk;

This is you,
Now and then,
Out of reach now,

Maybe,
Oils and pose;
But you,

None the less;
Captured,
Held,

Viewed,
And at least
Not forgotten,

As critics
Then and now
Shall be.
