Even the sanest of us,
Said Hank,
Have moments
When we cross over

Into insanity
And stare down
Into the dark abyss;
Some of us

Are there more often
Than others,
Some never step back
From the awful abyss,

But stare into the depths
Thinking themselves
Sane again,
But due

To the odd intricacies
Of the human mind
They don't know
But think all is well

And smile benignly.
Even the wisest of us,
Hank said,
Have our moments

When we cross over
The line into folly,
Some of us vacate there
Most of our lives,

Others take
The occasional trip
When their wisdom
Gives out

Or that human trait
Of stupidity
Kicks in
That has plagued humanity

Since the fall of Adam
Or whatever
Or maybe
The fourth of never.

Even of the saintliest,
Hank sighed,
Have moments
When we move over

The line to sin
And the dark ages
Of our lives begin,
Some spend more time there

Than others,
Some are there
Permanently,
Gazing at the saintly

With that sour stare
Of those
Who have not
Been there

Or didn't quite make it,
Or just didn't care.
