You still can’t believe
She died,
Even after
All these years;
Can’t believe
Cancer took her

Like some thief
In the night;
You still remember her
As that first love;
First kiss;
That girl next to you

On the school bus;
The holding of hands;
The laughter
And chasing
And catching
And kissing

And tickling
Where her mother
Would have scorned,
That innocent time,
All gone.
Each time

You see her brother
You want to say:
Did she really die?
Was it her
You told me of
Those many years

After we last met?
That stunned news
He told you,
Those unexpected words;
The sad look
In his eyes.

You do not ask him,
You want to pretend
That maybe
He got it wrong,
That maybe
Out there

Somewhere
She’s still alive,
Still living
With her husband
Or whomsoever
It was

Who took her
From you;
That maybe,
By chance
You’ll see her again,
That smile,

Those eyes,
That laughter
Ringing in your ears,
Something
To remind you
Of those innocent years.
