Instead of waiting
Nervously,
Biting her nails,

For him to come home
With his bellowing
Hurtful taunts,

His snide remarks
About her weird ways
And lanky looks,

His fitful temper
And his lashing fists,
She sits alone

In some bed sit
Gazing at a summer sky,
At birds on wing,

At faraway planes
Making marks
On the blue,

At the sounds
Of the MJQ
And their jazz

On the stereo,
And wonders why
She’d left it

So long
Before she took flight
Like birds

Migrating
To a warmer clime
In a distant land.
