Murphy (unused to it as he was)
Put the rifle to his shoulder and
His eye along the sight. When
Your man comes into view pull
The trigger, said the Mister,
(Murphy’d already forgotten
His name) a thin man with a cap

Clinging for dear life to the rear
Of his head. What if I miss?
Murphy enquired, lifting his
One good eye to the Mister.
You don’t; it’s imperative you
Don’t miss, the Mister said, his
Words granite hard, spat out

Between yellowing teeth. So,
I just pull the trigger when my
Man comes into view, Murphy
Said, and that’s it? That’s it,
The Mister affirmed, biting each
Word as if freshly minted. And
Who’s my man? Murphy asked,

Returning his eye to the sight.
His name’s Collins; he’ll be in
An open car, the Mister said,
You’ll be told when to shoot
And what to do when he comes
Into view. One shot; no messing;
Instead, you out of it and him dead.
