Some nights you dream
They pull the baby out
Of your womb, alive
And kicking and yelling
And causing a fuss, and they
Bring her to your arms, warm
And soft, smelling of nature
And life’s kiss; but then it all
Dissolves into molten mass
Of blood and mess and nothingness.

Some days you just want to lie
And stare at walls and listen
To hurtful memories of the cries
Of other women’s babies from the
Ward; those who were lucky
And made it through with baby
Intact and fingers all and an armful
Of cuddliness and baby’s bawl.

On certain nights hugging yourself
Tight, you imagine the baby in your
Arms against your breast, feeling her
Feed on the dug, the sound of her
Small swallow, her soft clutch of hand;
But nothing feeds or holds or clutches,
Only your flesh feeling your cold flesh
In night’s chill, alone and you crying still.
