No one bothers you
As you stand on the
Beach and light up a
Bummed cigarette; your
Mother just says, mind
The waves, they can get
Strong and take you off
And out, and you wish
It’d take her new
Creep Howard far from
Shore and out of your

Sweet life and hers; if
Only she’d listen,
And not make the same
Mistake each time, not
Take on the creeps who
Just want her for that
Bed thing and the drink,
And have her on their
Hairy arms, and run
You down and such things,
Which you’d not tell her

About because she’d
Think you’d gone off on
A loop or needed
To see a mind shrink.
You like to think while
Staring out to sea,
Watching the clear wide
Horizon for ships
And the distant sun.
You love to stand and
Watch the sea when it's

Getting late, thecool
Sea breeze in your face,
Until Howard says,
Isn’t it past your
Bedtime little girl,
You’re only eight now,
And your mother nods
As she always nods
After a few drinks
Or so, and wishing
Her goodnight and him,

Silently, a trip
To some hell, whispered
Behind your small hand,
You traipse off to bed
Knowing that he’ll come
Later to tuck you
In and all such things.
Not a good life for
A little woman;
Mother’s baby girl.
