Nothing fits anymore,
It all seems to fall apart
Like old cloth unpacked
From ancient boxes.
The voices seem so real,
Even the dead speak clearly
Inside your head, their every
Word rings true like a struck
Bell’s tone. You lay naked
On the bed, not yours,

Whose you neither know
For sure nor care anymore,
But you feel the chill dancing
Upon your skin, remember him,
His filthy touches, his breath
Reeking of liqueur and tobacco,
But that was long ago, so
The doctors say, put it away,
Says old Rabbit Ears, the aged
Nurse on the ward,whether

The memories or the finger
Playing inside you, she doesn’t
Say. Nothing seems to hold together,
It all comes away in your mind,
A puzzle unsolved, unsolvable,
Him staring from the four walls,
Jeering, sneering, wanting still
To have you, to grab and to feel
As he did then, but that was some
Time ago, the nurses suggest.

Give it a rest, Blondie says,
The night nurse, not the best
Of them, nor the worst, whether
Your harking back to those dark
Times or your hugging your naked
Breast, she doesn’t say, just
Walks off with that Marilyn Monroe
Gait, the head held high, leaving
You with your chilled body’s nakedness
And your unanswered question: why?
