Yes, you could see her
From where you sat in
The refectory; she was
The other side of the nun
Who was reading from
The small podium some
Dull book of the day.

You didn’t want to look too long
Or too often, you didn’t want to draw
The attention of other nuns to why
You gazed at Sister Elizabeth
And she sat returning your gaze
With that sparkle in her eyes,
And slight smile on her lips
As there was in former days.

The nun reading read on in her
Monotone voice, the words in
The air shaped by her tongue,
Hanging there momentarily
Until others came like dancing
Children and moved them on.

She lifts the spoon to her mouth,
You watch her hand hold with
Delicate touch, the eyes watching
You over the spoon, the smile
Intact, the gentle beat of her heart,
Heard only by you, like some distant
Drum across the way, filled your
Heart warmly and lasted the day.
