Although the baby died
Some time ago,
You still light a candle
In the baby's room

To shed a little glow
In the room's dark gloom.
All is as it was.
The cot still there

Undisturbed;
The blankets
And covers
On in place;

The tiny toys
In solemn peace
Along the sides;
The wallpaper

Of teddy bears
And dolls
Is less friendly now,
The curtains drawn

Against the day;
You would have it
No other way.
You finger

The cuddly bear;
Place a glance
At the pillow end,
Just in case

The baby's there
By some strange fiction
Of your mind's odd care;
But no;

All is vacant,
The cot is bare
Of baby now;
That grim night's

In history's grip;
The night too cold.
Just one more kiss,
One more hold.
