Suzie stared
Across the way,
At the buildings opposite;
At the dull blue sky;
Another dull day,
She sadly mused,

Her hair in disarray;
Her lit cigarette
Held limply,
Her dark dress
Feeling lived in,
And Archie,

Off somewhere,
With some other broad
In some dive
In down New York
Regaling her
With jokes and sex.

Suzie in her empty bed
Last night waiting,
For him, his return,
Her body aching,
Wanting,
Burning.

And now,
Still no one,
Just the dim light of day,
Gerry Mulligan’s baritone sax
Easing over the hi-fi
Low and cool;

And she standing gazing,
Feeling down,
Like one watching
The circus leaving town,
Leaving just one
Lonely dispirited clown.
