Tessa remembered the time
She was beat on the backside
With a bat by a teacher

In her first year at high school
In 59. She wasn't
The only one; other girls

Went through it too; but none of
The girls cried, it was like some
Ritual you went through from

Little girl to young woman,
Like menstruation only
Less messy, but equally

Embarrassing. She wondered
If those girls remembered now.
She heard rumours later, that

The teacher, a fat dame with
Short spiky hair, had taken
Some young girls to bed with her,

But that was just one of those
Girlish rumours that spread through
School like bushfires in summer.

Tessa's grandchildren didn't
Believe her; thought she was just
Fibbing to them; telling it

As it wasn't, just to be
The tough old Gran. But she and
The other girls knew it was

True, but none would admit to
It this long down the line of life,
They'd packed that sour memory

Away at the back corner
Of the mind, where no one would
See it and no one could find.
