The beach was deserted,
The sky unimpressive, and
He told you what was on the
Black ops that fall, someone
Was going to be hit, someone
Big, someone who was in line

For a turkey shoot. You nodded.
Things had been arranged quite
Deep. Keep it close to your chest,
He said, the cards are stacked,
This guy’s going to be whacked.
He offered you a cigarette; you

Took and lit up, inhaled deeply
As if this was your last breath
Before a certain death. Dostoevsky
Said it concentrated the mind,
The closeness of one’s dying
By firing squad or the hand

Of God. You exhaled, taking
Into mind the words he said,
Someone’s going to take a hit,
A black op; you knew then who
It would be. November 22nd
1963: President J. F. Kennedy.
