It was the man himself,
Michael Collins,
So granddaddy said,
There

At the bar;
Large as life,
Larger some say;
And he had a presence

About him
Like all great men.
Granddaddy took
A slow pull

On his pipe;
Stared at the ceiling,
Closed his dull eyes
For a moment or two;

Brushed shoulders
With the big man;
Came eye to eye,
Saw depth there

To the root
Of his soul;
Saw something else:
A disturbance;

A sound of gunfire
And a bullet hole,
And an echo
Disturbing the souls

Of others
Through the long
Troubled years
Of Ireland.
