You can imagine
What his words were
When he got home
To his wife, you can
Imagine him climbing
Into bed with her,
Putting his arm around
Her waist, whispering
In her ear, possibly making
Love later, with the stain
Of you still with him, clinging
To him, maybe your perfume
Hanging on to his every move.

You sip your drink, pull on
The cigarette, want to push
All those images out of your
Head, to forget, to pretend
He’ll be back in the bar
Beside you having just gone
To the john, but you know
He’s there beside her, possibly
Bringing her on to the heights,
The smile on her face,
Her eyes closed, her words
Flung out to the night like
Small bats encircling the room.

The smoke from the cigarette
Between fingers rises, your hand
Cupping your chin, thinking
Of him, of her, of them,
Wondering what each word
Was, what it meant if anything
At all, wanting him beside you,
Wanting to be beside him,
There in his bed, between his
Wife and him, she asleep,
Him in paradise, making
Love again, to you, while outside
In the cold night, the fall of rain.
