She still remembered
The push and thrust
Of the brutal soldier
Over and into her;
The stench of sweat

And death lingered
On his breath,
And the roughness
Of his tunic
Rubbed against

Her wide spread
Naked thighs;
And the tat tat
Of his foreign tongue
Riddled her ears,

Opened up her mind
To the fears
And threat
Of no tomorrows,
No mercy,

No sunset
Over the hill,
And far off
The sound
Of rifle fire.

And boom
Of big guns,
And she watched
With wide eyes
The perspiration

Slowly fall
From his damp
Forehead
Like warm
Summer rain.
