A GRANDAD AND WAR MEMORIES.

\"\"

Granddaddy said war sucked
And you remember the way he
Held on to the last syllable and
Drew out the sound of it as if he

Were going to puke. The men
Gone, best friends, blown to bits;
Here one moment gone the next,
Their last words caught in the

Wind or the blast of shell; and
The scent of death, clung, settled
Into cloth and skin. You remember
His eyes watered, the arthritic red

Knuckles around the pipe bowl,
The memories rising like the dead
From his mind and settling them
Selves before him by the fire. War

Sucks, he repeated, always has,
Always will, until we can settle
Arguments without the lies of
Politicians or the dark urge to kill.
