Each day she passes the
Hospital where baby died.
The huge white building
Like some sepulchre, still
Standing there. She can

Still pinpoint the window
Of the room. Can still see
The place she stared out on
A cold dark night wanting
To go home with her baby

The following day. It didn’t
Happen. Baby died. The white
Walls caught her cries. They
Took her to see the babe, let
Her have one last hold, one

Final gaze. Even now, she can
Still feel the baby in her arms,
Sense its heartbeat against her
Own, in contrast to the final
Hold, where all was still and

Cold and the eyelids held down
The last look. Each day she
Passes she fights to look away,
But something makes her look
Up, to view the window of the

Room, maybe to see some other
Woman there or her own ghostly
Shadow caught in the ever turning
Wheel of what might have been,
There in that room with the nurses
And doctors and dull white screen.
