By the way
He closed
The door
You knew
What kind of mood
He was in,

By the timbre
Of his voice
You knew
Whether it was best
To stay out of his way
Or come down

And greet him,
And try
And understand
His ways,
His often
Forgotten smiles,

His way of making
You laugh
Or cry
In the shade
Of one bad mood.
By the way

He called
You knew
If it was him
Or some other self,
Some other him
Which had crept

In in his place,
Standing there
Face to face,
The eyes
Either gazing
Or blazing,

The lips
Parted to speak
Kindly
Or bellow
Or scream abuse
Or swear.

By the way
The footsteps
On the stairs
Sounded
You knew
If it was

A greeting
Or a beating
That was coming
To meet you,
That the moon
In the corner

Of your window
Would be
More yellow
If the mood
Was dark
And the far off sound

Of an owl
Would echo
Your own
In the night.
