An audio recording found in a maintenance tunnel made on a mobile phone. The area was previously classed as a dead zone until military personnel retook the area. It has been assumed that the speaker was talking to someone, as two bodies where found nearby, blood drained in a way consistent with vampire feeding. The date on it; 7th on November, suggests it was recorded a week after the ‘incursion’.

You should hold still, your throat took quite a nasty hit. Might have damaged your vocal cords. Lucky I studied healing. Fucking vampires.

I built a few barriers between them an us, should slow them enough until dawn.

I suppose since there’s nobody left to punish me for this I can tell you everything. I’m recording this too. Somebody might find this, and I can guarantee it will play hell with the rest of my kind.

That explosion in the upper atmosphere, wasn’t a meteor, or terrorists, it wasn’t a nuke launched by accident, or whatever was told by your governments to hide the fact a thousand miles of area was decimated in an instant.

It was magic. It fell on Halloween of all days, the Brood obviously have a sense of humour.

It’s a hole through reality into umbral space, big enough to swallow this world whole.

My kind? We are the warriors of the unspeakable horrors that live in it. We just didn’t know it until last week. Well not all of us, the Brood obviously did.

Sometimes the umbra surges into our world. Anybody caught in it is changed into a magic user. That’s were the three houses come along and recruit the newly turned. We thought they were just random occurrences, or like the ocean tides following a pattern we couldn’t see. Turn out they were those nameless horrors recruiting us.

The first barrier just went down. Should have pilled the wood higher.

Every time magic is used the world wears away just a little more. Roughly every tenth spell will break a tiny hole into the umbra. Those just heal up though. The problem is we had no way of knowing that every time that happened it got weaker and weaker.

That’s their plan. Weaken the barrier enough to cross over on their own.

The leader of the Brood, if the rumours are true then he is the most powerful mage to ever have lived. Supposedly he walked into the umbra and stayed there for days. If you stay for more than ten seconds you die usually. When he came back he had so much power, and a new purpose. That’s when they started attacking the Order and the Hunters.

Over the last few years you probably noticed the number of missing people shot up. People were literally just disappearing with no hint as to a cause. That was the Brood.

They were taking the bodies and dumping them into the Umbra. That’s why we now have vampires wandering around at night.

Second barrier, that was fast. I placed three fucking fire doors in the way. Those things are heat tempered steel.

The things in the umbra are using the bodies as hosts. Sunlight seems to break their hold over the body, they can’t even keep their own magic from exploding. That’s why they burst into flames when killed, they loose all control.

The Brood thought this through pretty well. They found the one place on earth where the barrier was thinnest and began pushing against it.

It took them years, but they did it.

The day of nightmares, that’s what we call it now. But how can you have a day of something you get at night. It’s even called a night-mare, it’s in the name.

I suppose I’m beginning to crack up a little.

Can you blame me? I was at the flash point.

I was sent to investigate just what they were doing. My skill is jumping in an out of the umbra in different places, its kinda like teleporting only different. Makes it easy to get in and out.

Can’t do it anymore. Umbra’s like a tornado now, it’d tear me apart even trying.

I got into their den, just as they broke the barrier. No idea how I survived, the blast should have scattered by body parts over a hundred miles apart. I think magic users are kinda immune to it.

I suppose this makes no sense to you at all. You are just as clueless as all the others.

We’re dead. I suppose you already knew that though.

They killed everyone I knew.

My closest friend, we called him Schmetterling, died saving my life.

He was a right old bastard. Born around 1880 in Germany, hence the name, he always carried a pocket watch on a thin silver chain.

We were in our sanctuary; that old hotel that’s falling apart, that’s it. It only looks like a shithole, a good illusion spell will do that.

They charged for us first, we didn’t stand a chance.

Schmetterling tackled one of them as it went to bite me, had me pinned. I ran, I looked back for a moment as it tore his throat out.

The last barrier just failed.

If we’re lucky we might just make it to dawn.

Get ready.

The message ends there. The last few seconds are just yelling, then screaming and several noises described by our audio analysts as ‘pulpy’ and other similar descriptions.
