A QUESTION FOR AMERICA

Why do you need a gun?
Is it un-American
not to own one?
Unless you live in the desert
where large snakes abound,
or out in the country
with wild creatures around;
the only thing you might shoot
is each other;
be it  policeman, or schoolgirl,
or brother.

Why do you need a gun?
Is it un-American
not to own one?
If you live in the city
and are afraid of the dark,
or the strangers who linger
on seats in the park,
will a gun make you safer
if it sits in the closet,
or under the bed?
Is there power in knowing
you could shoot someone dead?

Why do you need a gun?
Is it un-American
not to own one?
If  you look at your children
with fear in your heart
is it not time to start
wondering why so many die
at the speed of a bullet,
commonly sought
and
so casually bought?
Why do you need a gun?
