THE WEEPING WILLOW

A cricket bat is made

from

the wood of a willow;

a tree that weeps,

like me,

to see

the end of an era.

Now three of the greats

walk away from the game

that shares a name

with an insect the Chinese revere

as a symbol of luck.

But luck played no part

in the art

of these three.

It was down to great skill

and determination.

That's what made a nation

shout their names

in games

that will live in sport's history.

Though the game will survive,

even thrive,

on young blood and talent;

the willow tree weeps.

For the bats its wood will create

won't wear the scars

caused by three dazzling stars;

Warne, Langer, McGrath.
