In this world, there are creatures...creatures you may not even dare to think about. Yes, there are such things as monsters, ghosts and all those useless creatures in fairytales. But I, my dear friends, am a fairy.

My name is Zara and I am fairy of the waters. There are many other fairies much like me. We serve each other just like any other village of the humans. I once interacted with one. Little did I know, I'd fall in love with him.

My second challenge here on Booksie! This challenge is for A7XRica. In this challenge, I had to pick a number and she'd give me a topic. I chose 20 and I got FAIRIES. Do enjoy! :]

I Just Couldn't Leave Him

Short Story

Fairies...

Fairies are not what you think we are. We don't have wings unlike the one's in fairytales...and we're not THAT small. We're as tall as an average Barbie doll and we can fly but we just don't have wings. The way they describe us in books are just disgusting. We don't wear dresses everday or have different colors per person...that's just ridiculous. We look human...it's like we're dolls that have come to life.

Present Day

I was awakened by the sound of the bomb. Loud crashes were heard everywhere and the house was shaking.

"Petty humans." I mumbled. I looked up at the shallowest part of the sea and saw boats...fishermen boats to be exact. It was about 2 AM according to how the moon hit the waters. Where I live in, that's how we tell time.

Where do I live you ask? I live in the deepest part of the Pacific. In this 'home', my family and I live to survive.

As for me...my name's Zara and that's all there is to it. No special powers or anything. No boyfriend or friends. I am 100 years old now and classified as a teenairy...stupid name I know. But in these ages, we might as well look like a late teenager in human years.

I left my bed and swam up to shore. I wasn't really allowed to do that but what the hell you know?

When I reached the top, I saw this small boat which had 'S.S. Zara' written on the side. My body was weakening as I sunk back into the water.

"It's him." I mumbled.

Summer of 1968

"I love you Eric the fisherman." I whispered in his ear. He smiled and made my small figure stand on his hands.

"I love you too Zara the fairy." He said with the most heartbreaking look in the world.

"We can't be together. It's not right for you...or me." I said, breaking into tears.

"Why not? It's just the difference in...species." He said chckling, making me shake and fall on his hands.

"That is exactly why." I said and flew to the window sill. I turned back to face him and see his beautiful face one last time.

"I'm going to live forever Eric. I don't want to waste my time in this relationship and end up watching you wither away." With that, I flew out and dove back to the ocean.

Present Day

"It can't be him."My heart said.

I flew to the edge of the boat and saw a sleeping old man. He had grayish white hair and some wrinkles planted on his forehead. I approached him quietly and tapped his nose which caused him to wake up. I squealed and hid on the roof of the boat. I watched the man stand from his chair and look up to where I was hiding.

"Zera?" He croaked in a rather deep old voice that made my knees go week.

"How do you know my name?" I said. He smiled and put both his hands together.

"It's me, Eric." He said. My eyes widened in horror as the memories came flooding back.

"You're not Eric! You're old!" I screamed. The man claiming to be Eric placed a hand on his heart as if feeling a stab with a knife.

"And the years have been kind to you Ms. Zara." He said smirking.

I can't believe that's him. That was my Eric. The Eric I have searched and waited for so long to take me back. And there he was...standing in front of me looking older than my father.

I flew down to his hand and leaned in closer to examine him. His deep brown eyes were still there...so was his cleff chin...and you could still see the faint scar on his left eye.

"You really are Eric." I said gasping. He smiled and raised his hand free hand to my cheek. His touch still gave me shivers.

"I missed you." He whispered. I touched the finger and held it in my hands.

"I missed you too." I said. I heard loud footsteps and just then a man showed up. He looked exactly like Eric. Eric shoved his hand behind him and I couldn't see a thing.

"Hey dad. We caught an approximate amount of 20 fishes." The boy said. It was like my heart was shattered into a million pieces.

"Okay. Ready the sails and we're ready to go." He said. I heard a slight cough and he cleared his throat before moving back his hand so I was in front of him again.

I think my heart stopped beating. I couldn't feel a thing in my body. All I saw was Eric with the fakest, saddest smile I have ever seen.

"Who was that?" I croaked, tears coming back. He shook his head and frowned.

"My son." He practically said it so fast I barely heard it.

"Ohh...She's a lucky woman." I said faking a laugh.

"She was..." He mumbled.

"Was?" I asked.

"She died a few years ago. Lung cancer." He said.

"I'm so sorry Eric...I-I didn't--" I stammered. He sighed and smiled back at me.

"It's fine. I'm over it. My son and I live together in New York. He's studying to become a doctor so fishing isn't really his expertice." He said. I smiled.

"He looked just like you, you know?" I whispered. He simply nodded.

"RAISING THE ANCHOR CAPTAIN!" A man yelled from the top of the boat. I stood from his hand and straightened up my clothing.

"Well, it was nice seeing you again Eric." My heart was breaking once again. It hurts everytime I say goodbye.

"What? I'm not letting you go this time." He said. I shook my head, tears filling my eyes. He lifted my chin up with his finger.

"Come with me. We could live the live we never knew we had." He said. Tears just kept flowing and flowing. It just wouldn't stop.

"I can't Eric. This is my home. And I love you and I want you to be happy...not with some fairy." I said. Anger flashed across his face as he started speaking.

"Not again Zera! I looked for you for over 10 years! I love you!" He said.

"Who's going to take care of your son when you're gone huh?! Me?!" I answered. He looked down at his feet and placed me on a table.

"I know Eric. You're sick too." I whispered.

"It hurts you know...not having someone." He said. I chuckled.

"That's just how life is." I said. He just sat there in silence

"Goodbye Eric." I said, flying off to the window.

"Zera wait!" He yelled. I glanced over at him and he was smiling.

"Kiss me." He said.

"What?" I cocked my head to the side not really sure what he was saying. He smirked and walked closer.

"Kiss me." He whispered before he was brushing his lips to my tiny ones.

And with that I just couldn't leave him.
