This is a rough draft of a poem inspired by the tragic story of Kitty Genovese. If you haven’t heard of the case of Kitty Genovese, here's a video about it- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNhvt4veQpk&feature=youtu.be . As someone who’s seen almost every horror film and crime documentary under the sun, this story still gave me a chill down my spine. Also made me think about society and our willingness to turn a blind eye to the suffering of others.

Thirty-eight pairs of eyes look on as I meet my demise,
they turn up their tv’s and they shut their blinds,
thirty-eight pairs of ears hear my screams,
they shut their blinds and turn up their tv’s

No use running, especially in heels,
I begged and pleaded and prayed for help,
a lamb to the slaughter, a cutlet of veel,
one slash, two slash, three slash, four,
hello Mr Concierge! Behind the locked door,
 so much for community,
they dream sweet dreams while he abuses me,
 where is the unity?,
while he penetrates and bruises me.

Mary-Anne, Mary-Anne,
 where are you my sweet?,
 he’s no friend of mine,
 he’s no friend of mine,
but I hear Dylan and slip away from this nightmare,
my heart with you but my blood on the sidewalk.
