What happens to dreams when they die?  Do they flee the heart, only to languish and die alone?
I believe that some dreams never die.  Once broken, they dive down into the very depths of your soul.  They find a dark corner to nestle with their shattered brethren, and await eternity.  In their wake they leave behind the pain of missed opportunities, the heartbreak of a lost love, and the darkness of death.
The absence of a dream spurs the birth of hopelessness.
Those broken dreams lay discarded as a testament to a life best forgotten.  Despair and anger stirs them in their sleep, refusing to allow their release.
Every once in a while, a ray of light will find its way to their depths to infuse them with a breath of life.  Those dreams gather together what is left of them, and wait to transcend their former selves.  Their resurgence is short-lived, and they return weaker for having had the chance to live again.
There are those that believe their dreams have come true, that their lives have been fulfilled, but beneath that contentment lies a desire to have more.  Which awakens yet another dream, left to fight for its life.
When the soul has taken all the burden it can withstand, when it has no more room to sustain broken dreams, then it is allowed to die.
