You think walking home is safe? Everyone does it, this I know. But not everyone makes it home. Two girls, Erica and Veronica were two ordinary girls. They had ordinary lives and walked home from school everyday. But this day was different. Something is going to happen to them and they don't know what it is. Who will make it home? Will both of them make it or just one? What if neither of them makes it home? Ha, ha silly me. Of course at least one has to. If one didn't, how did this story get out?

You think walking home is safe? Everyone does it, this I know. But not everyone makes it home. Two girls, Erica and Veronica were two ordinary girls. They had ordinary lives and walked home from school everyday. But this day was different. Something is going to happen to them and they don't know what it is. Who will make it home? Will both of them make it or just one? What if neither of them makes it home? Ha, ha silly me. Of course at least one has to. If one didn't, how did this story get out?
"Veronica, slow down!" Erica yelled after the both of them walked out of Mile High School. It was their last day of school before Christmas break and also a week before their birthdays. Veronica kept walking. "Thanks a lot for waiting for me!" Erica said finally caught up to Veronica. Veronica was silent. Erica looked puzzled. "What's wrong?" she finally asked. It was a while until Veronica answered. "Ron broke up with me." She mumbled. Erica gasped. "Oh my god, I'm so s-" "Please don't." Veronica interrupted. Erica shut her mouth and looked down at the ground.
They came up to Vermont Ave and turned right. "Veronica, I think you should try to talk about it. I mean I was hysterical when Tyler broke up with me since we were together for two years." "That was different Erica. You guys were freshmen when you two went out. Ron and I got together when we were juniors, which makes our relationship more serious. I mean we just had our one year anniversary!" Her face had turned red and her breathing picked up pace. "Veronica breathe." Erica said and started rubbing her back.
"It's okay, you're okay. Everything's going to be okay." Veronica had calmed a bit and sighed. "I'm overreacting." She finally said and sat down on someone's brick wall. Erica sat next to her. "That's good. You're actually sitting down. You never want to stop walking when we walk home." "I have good reason for that," she said glaring at Erica, "it's never safe walking by ourselves, no matter how 'safe' our parents say this neighborhood is." Erica suddenly burst out laughing. "You're still scared of getting killed out here? Ha, I told you that you shouldn't have listened to grandpa's stories."
Veronica shivered remembering all of their grandfather's disturbing stories he would tell them before they would leave his house. "Be forewarned," he had said one night, "never take your time walking home. There's always someone lurking in the shadows waiting to attack anything…" he had passed away a year ago. Since then, Veronica thought that since he was gone, his stories would come true, especially that one, the last story he had told them before their father had threatened him about scaring them. "Veronica? Come on! I want to get home and call Steven. Just because you're single doesn't mean I am!"
Veronica shook herself out of her daydream and started walking with Erica again. The sun was starting to set and that creeped Veronica out. She did not like the idea of walking home in the dark. She started to pick up speed and suddenly stopped dead in her tracks. Across the street she saw a black figure under a pine tree looking at her with glowing eyes. Her eyes widened and she panicked. She watched it creep against the wooden fence onto the street they were supposed to turn on…Macbeth lane. After hearing the whole conspiracy behind Shakespeare's play, she never liked walking down this street.
But, it was the only street in the neighborhood that led to their street. Erica looked at her confused. "What is your problem?" "There's somebody over there." She replied and pointed where she had seen the figure. Erica looked and shook her head. "Veronica there's nothing there." "I swear! I saw it walk on Macbeth Lane! Why don't we just turn around and go to Joan's until Mom gets home." "Oh stop being a baby! You're just scared because you replayed that stupid story in your head. Come on." Erica said grabbed Veronica's hand and started dragging her onto Macbeth lane. All of Veronica's muscles tensed and her legs began to shake.
A crack came from behind them. They both jumped. "Oh and you call me a Scaredy cat." Veronica said after feeling Erica jump. "Shut up!" was all she said. Then Veronica saw the figure again, this time it was closer and it was smiling at her. "Erica, dddo you sssee ttthat?" Veronica stuttered pointing at the figure. Erica was shaking too. "Unfortunately yes." She whispered. "Run!" they bolted. They ran and ran and when they seemed like they were at the end of the street they stopped to catch their breath. Erica was the one that looked up first and froze. Veronica noticed. "What? What is it?" she said standing up.
She looked where Erica was looking and realized why she froze. They were only five houses down from where they were standing. "Erica, run. Run as fast as y-" She heard Erica scream. She turned around and Erica was gone! "Oh my god, Erica? Erica!" She was shaking all over and hyperventilating. She bumped into something and screamed. She slowly turned around and it was a tree. She sighed and tried to calm her breathing. "It's okay Veronica. Maybe Erica found another way. She's fine." She kept telling herself. She decided to just keep walking and at least get home. She saw Erica's bag on the floor.
"Huh, that's weird. I don't remember hearing that fall to the floor," she thought and picked up the bag. The shoulder strap was wet. She freaked and hesitated to even look. She held her breath and what she saw almost made her gag. Blood. "EW, EW, EW!!!" She said and instantly dropped the bag. She looked around for something to wipe her hand off. The noise of laughter from behind her made her forget about the blood on her hand. Not even peaking behind her, she started running again, loosing her balance at first. The next thing she knew, she tripped over a rock and felt her face slam against the dirt pathway.
She heard footsteps approaching her. Trying her best to ignore the pain, she started dragging herself forward yelping every three times. A shadow covered her. I hand grabbed her shoulder and thrusted her on her back. She screamed…
Mwahahaha!!!! Scared ya didn't I? You really think this is how the story ends?
"BOO!" Ron said howling with laughter. Veronica slowly opened her eyes and blinked. There was her handsome man, his blonde hair flowing in the wind and his blue eyes sparkling at her. "RON!!!!!!" She yelled slapping him. "Ow." He said rubbing his cheek. "Not just Ron." Erica said laughing as she hopped down from the tree Veronica had fallen in front of. Veronica was still on the ground in shock. "Wait, the both of you planned this??? The whole time?" They both roared with laughter. "It was entirely your sister's idea. I just decided to play along." Ron said wiping his tears. "The breakup…the shadow person…was all pretend?" Veronica said dazed.
Erica sat down next to her and put her arm around her shoulders. "Yes Veronica. I was done with you getting scared about walking home. So I decided to make it fun and spook you. I had Ron pretend to break up with you so we had something to talk about and I knew you would have a nervous break down. That gave me the reason to mention the scary story and creep you out." Veronica looked up at Ron. "So we're still together?" he chuckled, picked her up and kissed her. "Yes love. You really think I would leave such an amazing girl?" Veronica smiled. She felt a little better now knowing all that had just happened wasn't real. He wrapped his arm around her waist, Erica grabbed her bag and they walked the rest of the way home.
