It was a little past three A.M. and I couldn't sleep. I had been having horrible nightmares the past few nights and they had been keeping me awake. I decided it would be a good idea to take a warm shower in an attempt to clear my mind.

My name is Lauren. I'm nineteen years old and live with my dad and my ten year old brother, TJ. Our father fixes MRI magnets so he's called away alot on business. The responsibility of looking after my brother then falls solely on me. Our mother died when TJ was only two. He didn't know her very well and often asks a lot of questions that are still very painful to answer. I still remember everything from the way she smiled to the smell of her perfume. I loved my mother, still do, and there isn't a day that goes by when I don't think of her.

The hot water ran over my skin as a leaned up against the wall. My eye lids were sore from having been open all night. I dreaded going to sleep. I was past the point of exhaustion to the point where my vision swayed and I couldn't tell what was real anymore. Water circled the drain and made a strange gurgling noise as I turned off the shower. I ran my fingers through my blonde hair, ringing out the excess water before grabbing my towle and wrapping it around my torso. I rubbed my eyes with the palms of my hands and let out a long yawn as I stepped out of the shower and onto the mat before me. My spine cracked softly as I stretched.

Slowly, I rolled my neck to work out the knots that had been building due to stress then wiped the fog from the mirror. I rubbed my eyes again and looked up. A gray face with scales and random tufts of hair stared back at me through a pair of bright yellow eyes. Jagged, razor sharp teeth stuck out of its jaw. The beast in the mirror lunged forward and I let out a startled yelped. The mat beneeath me slipped and i tumbled backward before striking my head on the wall behind me. Suddenly, TJ burst in through the door.

"Lauren, Lauren," he shouted and looked down at me on the floor. I cradled my head and rolled side to side cursing to myself. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I grunted and pulled myself to my feet. the mirror caught my attention again but the beast was gone. "What are you doing out of bed?" I looked down at my brother who stared up at me through his big brown eyes.

"I had a bad dream." He whined, "Can I sleep with you." I let out a long sigh then glanced back at the mirror.

"I guess so, " I replied, "just let me get changed first." TJ smiled and nodded as I walked out of the bathroom. Who am I to say no to him? I had a bad dream too, maybe this'll be good for both of us.

I woke up the next morning and jumped, forgetting that TJ was in the bed next to me. A small laugh escaped my throat at the sheer stupidity of my actions. I pulled myself to my feet and walked over to my dresser, being careful not to make much noise so I didn't wake my brother.

I grabbed a set of clothes and retreated to the bathroom to change. After changing, I walked down stairs and got started on breakfast as I usually did. TJ liked pancakes so I figured, why not. I poured the mix into a bowl, cracked a few eggs, and added milk all before turning on the small TV on the counter. A news report kicked on about a crazed gunman taking a city bus hostage. A look of disgust crossed my face and I shook my head. It was awful to watch, yet I couldn't look away.

The cops had surrounded the bus as the man inside paced back and forth.

"No one is listening to me!" He shouted as he waved a small handgun around, "we are not long for this world! The end is nigh, we're all going to die!" I stopped stirring pancake batter and placed the bowl onto the counter. This man was seriously disturbed.

"Put, the gun down and come out with your hands up!" An officer shouted and aimed his gun.

"Don't you see?" the man shouted as the cameraman focused on his face. The gunman shouted through an open window as several frightened hostages cowered behind him. "This is the only way I could get anyone to listen to me! Dreams! Pay attention to your dreams!"

I watched as the officers around the bus exchanged confused looks. Still, they refused to back down.

"Come out with your hands up!" they shouted again. The gunman almost looked horrified. not by the cops, but by his own story.

"They are going to come." he said, "they will kill you all! but they aren't going to get me." He pressed the barrel of the gun to his right temple then pulled the trigger. i gasped aloud and quickly shut off the TV. My heart raced and beads of sweat rolled from my forhead. Thoughts of my nightmares raced through my mind.

I was running, TJ's hand in mine. we were being chased by something, I don't know what. It was big and the Earth rattled beneath its feet. TJ looked back and screamed as I fearfully pulled him along. Most of the city was destroyed. there was fire and chaos all around us. Then, TJ trips.

"LAUREN!" He calls and I turn around. I run to him and go to help him up but whatever is chasing us closes in fast. I hold my brother close and we close our eyes and that's where it ends. It's always the same, and I can't escape it.

"Pancakes?" TJ asked and sat at the table. I opened my eyes and turned around.

"Yeah," I said with a smile, "pancakes." i then continue to stir the batter and pour it onto the skillet. TJ loved the sound it made when the white goo touched the heat. I made six pancakes; three for each of us, then put them onto plates.

"Do you want milk or orange juice?" I asked.

"Coffee!" TJ shouted and looked at me. I raised an eyebrow.

"Milk or orange juice?" I asked again. He smiled wide as if to say; "You can't blame me for trying. I tussled his hair as I poured orange juice into his glass.

Suddenly, a loud explosion radiated from outside and the ground shook briefly.

"What was that?" TJ asked as he braced himself on his chair.

"I don't know." I replied and placed the jug of juice on the table. "Stay here." I quickly ran through the house and threw open the front door. The next thing i knew, i was greeted by a mob of screaming people. They were running from something so I stepped outside and looked.
