Call me a late bloomer.
Most kids go through this phase from 2-5
I'm 16 years old and I'm just now getting there.

When I was little, I always saw my peers carrying around something.
Some trinket to keep them safe.
Something they were forever attached to and could never let go.
Some had a binkie
A blanket
Some assorted stuffed animal…

I never had that.

I tried though.
I would pick a stuffed animal and stick to it no matter what.
But I constantly found myself not caring for it as much as I probably should.
It was more of a responsibility.
As though it were a wallet or purse.

I ditched it.

Years passed and I continued to have friends share their special thing with me.
Each one began with the phrase “I’ve had it since I was a baby”.

I nod as though I knew what that meant.

More years passed.
Then I met you.
I couldn’t let you go.
From the day you walked through the classroom door,
I was stuck.

I was…attatched.

I found myself hoping to have you in another class.
When that wasn’t the case,
I found myself searching for you in the hallways
at lunch

The day came when I could finally call you mine.
I never wanted to go anywhere without you.
I wanted more memories with you.

You were my trinket.
My binkie
My blanet
My stuffed animal.
I never went through that phase when I was younger
Because of you.

The only sad part is,
I lost track of you and couldn’t find you for a year and a half
and here I am
Still searching
Still looking for a way to call you mine.

I’m still attatched.

Everyone is long passed their phase
And I have yet to get through the worst part.

The seperation phase.
