A birthday letter

Hello, honey. It's your mother. I don't know if you'll ever read this, or when you will ever read this, but there are some things I wanted you to know.

If you are reading this and I am no longer here, I wanted you to know, I fought for you. I fought for you every step of the way, and I am sorry that I could not be there for your birthday. They have captured me, and they have threatened to kill me dozens of times, but they haven't yet, so there is still hope. That's what I want you to believe in: hope. Even if I don't make it out of here alive, there is still hope. I realise that my only chance to escape is to fight, because the stupid government will not hand over the ransom money. Maybe you'll follow in your mother's footsteps and be an explorer yourself, or maybe you'll learn from my stupid mistakes. Either way, I know that you will do well in life. I knew it from the start.

I was there for you on every birthday until now. I remember your first birthday. We threw a party. Your grandparents were there, and your father, of course. Over the years, we've had so much fun and I've appreciated every second of it. I will always appreciate the times I spent with you. You were the apple of my eye - more than that. I loved you with every fibre in my body, and that's what I'm fighting for.

You're fourteen now. God, how the time has flown. Just remember: popularity is not everything. You're a very intelligent girl, so you have to focus on your studies. Make youre mother proud. Soon, you'll be a real adult, with a job and family of your own. When you have your own children one day, just teach them everything that you believe in, and make sure they're good people. I know you'll do great - you just have to believe in yourself.

It looks like I have to go now. I can hear them approaching. Don't worry. This letter is buried in a safe place, and one day, it will be found, just hopefully in the right hands. So, goodbye, and happy birthday, my love, and don't grieve over me any more than you need to.

Love from your mother xxx
