She sat snapping string beans
scrapping the scales off red fish
her knife’s blade buried beneath
layers of yam and onion skin

She enjoyed these moments
legs cocked wide pot in-between
a clarity of knowing what to discard
what to keep where things stood naturally

She had always loved his hands
more than his arms
his brawn more than the
lies from his mouth

The way he cared for the children
giving them what was left in his eyes
he was a damn good father yet
in totality not what she desired

But what is there that comes whole?
At times only prime cuts to admire
