I sit alone now, waiting for death

There's reason to believe this will be my last breath

The others lay fallen alongside the rats

My brothers, my family (I thought they would last)

A sniper lays silent a few trenches away

Weary, yet collected, amongst this great fray

He waits for a target, to enter this hell

But, all he receives is artillery shells

The air, thick with gas, blinds every man

For that, I think, is why my friends ran

So here I remain climbing the ranks

Until my life is ended by the German tank
