To the one I feared to love

You worked at me so hard

crawling deep under my pale, cold skin

looking for a way in.

But fear repelled you from my heart

not ambivalence, nor disinterest.

I feared to fall too far.

It was easier to blame

to hide my guilt, my sadness, my shame.

It seemed safer to be a ghost.

Silent

Indestructable

Still

For if I was already dead

What's left to kill?

You worked at me so hard

cutting open my wounds and scars

If only you knew what lay beneath.

Behind my sturdy, cold iron bars.

The visage of a man bitter and marred,

a spirit that fights and loses

covered in so many bruises.

To the one I feared to love,

just know I wish I could have.

I was never unfeeling, cold or glad

that I broke the thing that we had

Just know that I feared to love you.

And now my heart has turned to sand.
