A Closer Look
There are people speaking all around me, but I can hardly hear them. The world around me is silent; all but the rustling of leaves that are trying to resist moving, but the breeze won’t allow it. A faint bird chirp can be heard and I wonder why no one ever listens to the beautiful melody coming from this little creature. I suppose life flies by too fast to notice, but I have decided that today is the day to take things in. My face is practically numb from the frosty breeze nipping at my face constantly, but I can hardly notice. After all, who has the time to worry or complain when the best portrait is being painted all around you?
It’s the little things in life that are the greatest to see if you just stop and look. I see the multicolored leaves hanging by a simple thread to their limbs and I think of what a shame it is that this amazing gem would soon become brown and nothing more than a part of the landscape. It’s hard to grasp the idea of how we could one day be staring at it in awe and the next crumple it under our feet. It reminds me how we treat people quite frankly; one day we simply pretend to treat them highly, then the next day we treat them like a leaf on the ground, nothing more than something to step on. I look up, looking for a revival from my sudden melancholy mood and I find what I was looking for. At first, all that can be seen is a dusty, gray sky, but if you were to look past that, you’d see the eighth ocean hanging above all and it’s as if it is saying: “If only people would look past outward appearance, they’d see the inner beauty that everyone possesses.” I look around, hoping to see at least one person realize this, but instead they are all in groups talking words as sharp as steel towards their fellow peer. I’m sure I am a popular subject right about now; sitting in the moist grass and looking around like I have not a care in the world, but why should it matter? Life is too precious to focus on others faults, and if we all were to see this well the positives go on and on just like the luscious, emerald field in front of me. Now, these are the lessons I have managed to capture today from the greatest teacher, the one who has painted this portrait, and tomorrow more will be revealed. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll see it one day too.
