Safe Mountain

^

From my safe mountain I looked down;

At the beauty and majesty all around.

The woodlands, lakes, valleys and towns.

I looked up to the skies, when clear and blue;

a skylark or if lucky, in tandem, perhaps two.

And at night cast so far apart were the stars

Wondrously constant and calmly familiar.

^

I thought, you are not as fortunate as I

You do not sit on my mountain up high.

I watched you scurrying beneath me.

and wondered, how can you appreciate what you see?

All bustling and bumping under my watching eye.

Aloof, superior, only I knew the route to the sky.

^

The one day, whist at odds with my muse.

A hiker arrived and to leave did refuse.

They asked me to travel with them down below;

They assured me it was a safe place to go.

They talked of family and the joy of sharing;

They told me of community, love and caring.

^

And at first it felt a new and good place to be;

Then they walked on ahead and abandoned me.

And as I climbed through the trees to higher ground;

In panic, disorientated a new place I found.

A place of boards, circuits, bytes and bits;

A tower of sorts with silicone chips.

^

In this place I climbed up onto a plateau;

Away from the stress and towards the gallows.

And as I searched for a way to my mountain,

I bathed with others in this digital fountain.

Static I became, in this electrical air;

Detached from humanity and ceasing to care.

^

It was then that the storm troopers came

And dragged me through the town in shame.

What could I say, but guilty as charged

I was not like you, but a monster a large.

You could not have known I once sat serenely

At peace with myself, till you beckoned so keenly

^

From my safe mountain I no longer look down.

Much higher is my mountain with no route to me found.

The Skylarks may soar and contentedly twitter;

The stars may join together and glitter

Head in my hands I sit here on my rock;

Not superior, but alone, my life run amok.
