Waiting for the End
Focused, direct, driven he had been
Aspired and achieved
All things done right
Followed the path
Made his way faithfully in life
But now he was just waited for the end.
Alone he thought of what he had lost
The girl he had married
A compassionate soul
She had been damaged by her past
She needed to be loved, unconditionally
It had been too great a sacrifice to give
Driving forward: Obstinate determination
Being what ‘they’ said he could never be
He did not see he was damaged too
Now he was just waiting for the end
They had crept upon him, the vines of destruction
Sown by the poisonous seeds of his childhood
Rooted in his subconscious secretly entwining his mind
Twisting his thoughts. Silently burrowing
Undermining all he had built
Watered by instant access society they had swelled
Only when all else had been choked had they
shown themselves in their treacherous glory.
Sanities saviours they had lied, leading him into virtual madness
It was not till the last had he felt the vines tighten
A little too late he had called out for help
Now he was just waiting for the end.
It was as the creepers stole hopes last light
When the end seemed inevitable
It was then in desperation he hadreached out
To a therapist, a gardener of sorts
She did not burn from the top or tear at the vines
Indiscriminately ripping away at what could only be seen
She did not force her way in but handed him tools
Suggested places to dig to get at the roots
And there in the fertile earth of the past they lay
The origins of his path, the good and the bad.
It was here that he chose what to sever or save.
He had returned to the beginning while waiting for the end
And with the vines dying back, withering, dropping away
The person inside who had always been could be seen
Not exposed, but at peace with himself
Now clearer in mind
Still obstinately determined
To do all things right
Still focused and driven
He will follow his path
To the future that lays out of sight
It is clear to him now, she does not hate him
Just the monster that engulfed
She still has love; he can learn to love fully
For now he is waiting for this end
But already overlapped
Is a new beginning
