Yellow barrier Thing
Of a morning I take a walk
Down by the river
Way from the chatter and talk
But today two furlongs in
There in a field
A bright yellow barrier thing
Set in a square five foot wide
What was it for?
To protect the grass inside?
This frame in yellow got me thinking
Perhaps it’s a bog
And the ground there was sinking?
Possibly a well right next to the river?
That didn’t seem right
So other answers my mind did deliver
Maybe there’s a gang of tiny men
Cutting the grass
In the safety of this pen?
Minituremen in grass, a little absurd
More likely a colony of
greater crested earth worms to be observed
As I circle this square wondering why
I noticed a sign hung on its side
A man from the council must have passed by
For there amidst forty acres of meadow
The sign must have been fixed
By a diligent rule reading fellow
They apologised for the inconvenience caused
and made reference to
work of an essential sort
Hmm, I thought what does that mean?
Is it an
entrance to a newly found coal seam?
And what of the ‘inconvenience’ claused?
It was not in my path so
Is it’s in the yellowness that offence is caused
Perhaps the sign was for the cows instead
Thank moo for
not munch here the sign should have read
Whatever the reason for the yellow barrier thing
I thank it
And most gratefully, for this poem it did bring
For this poem is like a that odd little square
A little out of place
In the meadow of more serious writing there
And if you have not enjoyed this little quirk
I apologize for any inconveniences causes
During the writing of this none essential work
