My Trees

The pines stand tall
defiant amputees
claiming no ill-effects
they peg out the sky
jeering over his fence

my trees

I can stand
in a patch of sunlight
at the sink
at the kitchen window

my trees

pottering among tomatoes
He heard me
that first week.
“Dangerous” he said
face half-obscured by the lattice
as he poked and prodded
to tease out
some indication

but I kept my silence
and later,
watched
with a bird on a branch

waiting
for
nothing at all.
