Into the darkness he looked. That bleak winter chill nipping at his collar. He pulled his collar up and lit up another smoke. Thinking back over the past few days, he couldn’t help but smile at how lucky he actually was. Fortune had finally shined it’s light on a boy that had been dragged up on the streets. For so many years Eli had had nothing. For years he had wandered from town to town, half-starved and desperate, stealing what he could to get by. But now he had it. He had everything he ever needed. He had love. He had a family.

His name had been cleared, but at a high price. The loss of a sister, a sister that he never even knew he had, but still a sister. His twin sister, Ella. He sat on the porch step and remembered everything that had happened over the past few days. He closed his eyes and pictured her face, the tears falling down her face as she lay dying in his arms.

He pushed the images out of his mind. It was time for a new chapter in his life. He picked up the file from beside him. Inside of the file was the information the Sergeant had given him about his family and sisters. He sat there, staring at the file. Unable to open it at first, the fear of what he might find inside of it was weighing heavily on his mind.

Finally he opened it, waves of emotion spread through him like wildfire as he looked at its contents. There were many sheets of paper in the file, split into three individually bound sub files, each with their own picture. He began reading them and taking in every bit of information.

An hour later and he had learned as much as he could, everything that he could possibly learn about his mother Ronnie, his twin sister Ella and his younger sister Emily. Out of them all, it was little Emily he felt most sorry for. His mother was dead, died of a drug overdose a few years back. He had tried to save Ella, but had failed and now she was dead. A tear fell down his face as he remembered the night before. There was nothing he could do for either of them. But his baby sister was different.

Yes, Emily was a different matter altogether. She was nine years old. She wasn’t really his full sister. She was actually his half-sister. They had the same mother but different fathers. The look on her face was that of pure innocence, joy and hope. The smile on her face was so sweet, it made him smile and feel warm, but bring more tears to his eyes.

He got lost in the moment, remembering all the bad times he had, staring at the picture and wondering if her life was going to be that bad. He had heard stories that sometimes foster care can be good. But nine times out of ten it is bad. He did not want her having the same life that he had. He wanted to meet her, to take her away and give her a better life. But did he have enough to give her the perfect life she deserved?

He sat there staring longer and longer at the picture. Hours passed before he finally snapped out of his dream like state. He knew what he had to do. He had to get her away from that life. He didn’t want her having the same life that he had, or the same life that Ella had.

Standing up, he sees Jeeves and Glory in the distance out for a walk. He makes his way back into the house, walking silently past Red and Darwin in the living room and past the kitchen door where he could here Lester singing country songs to Tsugi. Along the corridor he walks and enters his room.

Putting on a CD that he borrowed from Jim, he sits down at the desk and begins to write everything that needs to be done. For hours he sits at the desk, the CD repeating the songs over and over again, he gets lost in the music. As he finishes off his writing, it is then that he realizes something. He smiles to himself and sits back in the chair. For once in his life, he has something to live for and look forward to.
