FRIENDS FADE

BY BRONSE BAKER

Friends fade into memory

Exploits grow

As memory sweetens in the cask

Sold by the glass each night in deep sleep

The vapor of youth escapes through the cracks

Under the window sill of time

Regrets creep in and rest behind the pillow

Hoping to make their bones and become Nightmares

Friends fade to the last pages of the newspaper in small type

Where did it all go?

Why did it go?

Friends fade like small yellow pictures curled in a box

Girls you never got to sleep with

Cars you never owned

I would like to make amends

To friends

And to enemies

Distance makes the view much clearer

Wrongs I have done words I have spoken

Foolish together with choices together

That weighs so much more than I’m sorry

Together with forgive

Together with dreams come nightmares as I sit and smoke naked in the dark

A bowl full of Nightmares rolled up like cigars I smoke them till I sweat blood

Like a hippo grazing to far from his river he can’t get back before the sun shines hard on his back

His two large teeth useless in the sun

So he lies down and I go to sleep

And wait for the sound of the crows

We wait together for forgiveness

And for friends coming on this track

Friends fade

Amends can not be made

Time slips out under the window sill in a draft

Caught by the crows and picked clean
