This is a poem I wrote while going through a divorce. At the time, I had discovered that my then husband of 6 years was being unfaithful. We had a 5 month old child at the time. It was painful to come to the realization that I had to let him go and take on the challenge of being a single parent. The poem talks about how I felt during this time, how I found the stregnth I needed to carry on and how life goes on.

The River Still Flows

I use to be your girl

You use to be my world

Our love is in the past

Too bad it didn’t last.

I tried to give you a chance

All I wanted was a bit of romance

But you chose your stance

And never once asked me to dance

You made me feel like second best

I was never better than the rest

I gave you all of me

Everything that I could be

You made me live a lie

I felt like I would die

I had to be strong

I couldn’t let you do us wrong

As I lay there on the floor

I heard a knocking at my door

Said will you let me in?

I know how hard it’s been

Wipe the tears off your face

I will guide you to a new place

I can help you see the light

I will make everything all right

I will never let you down

I have always been around

Stay with me and stand your ground

You were lost but now you’re found

I was cleared from all the haze

From the darkness I did raise

I bared many blows

But life has not froze

The rose still grows and the river still flows

With Him at my door my heart stays

Until the end of days

With Him, I stand tall

He got me through it all

He told me you would call

But now, you can’t make me fall
