If it is true that love’s a race,
Then can I live with second place?
And be content to have his scraps,
Desperate for time, tonight perhaps?

Or should I make myself not feel,
Turn my unwilling heart to steel?
Make my soul to squelch it’s ache,
My mind’s in charge, make no mistake.

For when I’m gone, I know he’s there,
To you I’m just a quaint affair.
And all along I have known,
I’m merely convenient, when you’re alone

Yet underlying your protestations,
Professed undying adorations,
Your words of love bear a bitter pill,
Throughout it all, you love him still.

So here I sit, all bruised and battered,
With tear stained shirt and face a-splattered.
One last truth that I must face,
I’ve run my race, I took second place.
