Cinders falling ;
In the glowing hearth
Falling slowly from grate to pyre
Gone is the family now
Back to their own home fire
She sees the piano bedecked with cards
From friends who pray they’ll see her in the spring
And she wonders what he Spring will bring
And knows that time may not allow them
Or her, that much life or time or that much forward ,
In time ; but what is time
But another punctuating chime
A pendulum swaying
In remorseless rhyme
To see more cinders falling .
She goes to the piano
And gently touches C
And wonders what they see
In the old family photo
Beneath the piano settee
Of days she shared with her husband
Black and white and nights of joy
When they together sat in and
As one the looked in wonder at their new borne boy,
As the fire grew dim
And neither saw or cared about the
Turns the pages of the album
Kisses pages as they tumble
Heavily , but slowly ,
Wearily , surrendering ,
Like the cinders falling
Like cinders falling
