I once read these words,
Which have haunted me ever since.
“The only way to find true happiness
Is to risk being completely cut open.”
We are naturally guarded against a dangerous thing,
Giving someone else a stake in our happiness.
Of this I know, you can be sure.
I’ve guarded myself well, but not anymore.
Day by day, hour by hour, seconds at a time,
Each grain of sand fell to the bottom of the hour glass.
As, slowly, you seeped into my thoughts, my mind.
I could not defend myself,
Nor did I want to.
Your beauty came in such small doses,
Like a slowly growing bouquet of roses.
Yes, you are beautiful physically,
But a pretty face is not hard to find.
Everything that makes someone who they are,
That is what slowly consumed my heart.
But you did not protect me from it
As you should have.
If you have not one rose for me,
Compared to the bouquet I have for you,
Then do not pretend to give me flower petals.
