Trees sprouted red, yellow, orange, and green. Surrounded by autumn's perfection, they walked together, hands bound tightly. A cool breeze blew through her thick dark brown hair, and they walked, in simple silence, enjoying one another's company. In mid-step, Aimee stopped, leaned forward, and kissed Gabriel gently on his forehead.
"I love you, Baby. Did you know that?" she asked in a solemn voice.
Softly he replied, "Of course I did, and I love you too Sunshine."
He raised his hand above their waists, and noticed that their hands fit perfectly together. It was as if her fingers were meant to fill the spaces between his and vise versa. Almost like finding two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together. She looked up at him and smiled, and that made him so happy. Together, they were lost in the moment, wishing never to be found. The bold scent of autumn leaves and fresh cut grass rose around them. The cool, fresh fragrance of air made them feel as if they were floating. All the un-serene distractions around them had evaporated, and now the sounds of their simultaneous footsteps stood out.
For a moment they stared into each other's eyes. His were a perfectly blended mixture of hazel and green. Hers, a deep chocolaty brown. They finally arrived at the hay stand, and carefully looked around. They made it a hobby to come every fall to the Fall Town Festival and carve a pumpkin. They loved it, and it was a great way to spend time together. An immense and beautifully orange pumpkin caught all four of their eyes, and they began carving with everyone else.
"I'll cut off the top and then we can take out all the gross stuff." He said comically and began to cut. With a quiet nod, she agreed. After Gabriel got the top off, Aimee dipped her hand in, and scrunched up her face. A clear indication of how disgusting the insides felt between her fingers. Gabriel responded with a light chuckle.
"You're so cute, Baby. You should see your face."
She lifted her eyes and grabbed his hand.
"There. It's empty," she exclaimed with pride. After drawing the face on with a jumbo black sharpie, she began to cut. Gabriel stood by and watched. She made the first incision, and moved along the line slowly and smoothly, but the knife got stuck in the pumpkin's thick shell.
"Trouble in paradise?" Gabriel sarcastically asked.
"It's stuck, Baby. Can you help me?"
A motion of Gabe's hand toward hers must have been magic, because suddenly the knife slipped through the pumpkin, and sliced the skin on one of Aimee's fingers. Jerking her hand back from the pain, she looked down at the crimson red substance slithering out of the cut like a secluded snake attempting to break free. Her eyes, watery and expanded, lifted to Gabriel's lean face as he motioned to her hands. Softly, he took her pale wounded hand into his, covered it with his shirt, applying pressure to kill the snake.
"Are you okay, Baby?" he asked as his sight transferred from their hands to the small tear falling gracefully down her soft cheek.
"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for taking care of me, Baby. I really don't know what I'd do without you." His eyes lit up as he saw a faint smile form upon her mouth.
His lips kissed her wound, as if it had made everything disappear, and his hand moved to wipe the tears from her cheeks. A simple peck on her nose made her forget about her cut, and think solely about how much she loved him.
"You're welcome," he said, and hugged her passionately. "I love you," he whispered. Her hands roamed from his back to his soft brown hair as she gave her obvious reply.
"I love you too, Sunshine."
Leaving the pumpkin and knife behind, they turned around and began walking. Hands connected and smiling. Suddenly the moment was lost again, and no one would begin searching for it until they arrived home. Footsteps echoed back slowly, as a happy tear fell down Aimee's cheek. There is no such thing as trouble in paradise, she thought, and walked quietly along.
