This was a writing assignment for a college course called Radical Amazement. We were instructed to created any form of poetry and captrue still images to create this video essay. I have omitted the audio but I really enjoyed writing this poem and I wanted to share this piece with others. My inspiration for this piece was to acknowledge the beauty in others but most importantly remind individuals not to be so critical of the beauty in others they don't understand.

Your perception of beauty is distorted by the lies you have appraised.

The scowling eyes you use to scrutinize do not go unnoticed.

Your laughter and extended index finger have been the preludes to someone’s

low self-esteem. Put down your gavel and let the black robe fall from your back.

Your eye gates lead to the dark and bottomless pit of your soul.

Your heart has become cold and callus causing you to forfeit

on the world’s beauty surrounding you. Envy, jealousy, and hatred accompany you,

as you have made them your idols; you have officially become a victimizer.

Boastfully pompous you sit on your narcissistic throne. All hail the king who chooses

the path of ignorance, instead of an open mind accepting differences. You pity those who

do not resemble you, as if they are to be ashamed. Yet, there is nothing to emulate as

your dark and grotesque stature is most prominent. Choosing this shallow path will not

allow you to be engulfed in beauty, love, and compassion which are real definitions of living.

Step out of darkness and into the light I beseech thee.

Life is so beautiful and most importantly, so are the people within.

Make a vow to no longer be critical of what you cannot comprehend.

Rather welcome the challenge of new understandings. There is culture all around and outside of you,

when you look into the hearts and see the beauty in others.
